Profile

Logan Sargeant is the first American driver to be on the Formula 1 grid since Alexander Rossi in 2015 and the first American to start an F1 season since 2007.

He was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and like most Formula 1 drivers, he began his racing career in karting. He found early success in the 2015 World Junior Karting Championship before making his car racing debut in Formula 4 United Arab Emirates.

From there, it was a steady climb up the ranks including a move to Europe where he competed in the 2017 British F4 Championship alongside Oscar Piastri, a man he will once again race against in 2023.

In October 2021, he moved a step closer to Formula 1 as he joined the Williams Driver Academy and had his first run out in an F1 car at the post-season test in Abu Dhabi.

A few months later, he made his debut in Formula 2 with HWA Racelab before earning a full-time seat with Carlin, the same team that had given the likes of Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg, Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris a chance in previous years.

As he progressed in F2, he became a strong candidate for the Williams seat with Nicholas Latifi confirmed to be departing the team following the end of his contract.

On the weekend of the 2022 United States Grand Prix, Williams team boss Jost Capito announced Sargeant would drive for the team provided he obtained the required number of super licence points which he duly did with a P4 finish in the F2 Championship.

Logan Sargeant joined the Formula 1 grid as one of three rookies on the grid alongside Oscar Piastri and Nyck de Vries. He was one of only two still standing at the end of the season, but it was touch-and-go at times.

Career

Logan Sargeant joined Formula 1 with almost no experience under his belt with the American having only tested an F1 car in the 2021 Abu Dhabi post-season test and again in the 2022 test.

It alas showed in his performances.

The perennial backmarker on the grid and all too often in the races as well, 16 races went by before he scored his debut point. He did so at the American Grand Prix, his second of three homes.

But with that his only point in a season in which he was whitewashed in qualifying by his team-mate Alex Albon, 22-0, Sargeant was dogged by rumours of pending exit with a queue of hopefuls lining up to replacing him. He didn't help his cause with a spate of crashes.

Williams, though, opted stick with the driver for 2024, team boss James Vowles talking about investing in him, but it's fair to say that could be it for the driver unless he shows a huge improvement. He scored one point to Albon's 23.

History

Logan Sargeant has competed in a variety of motorsport series, most recently Formula 2 with Carlin. He achieved a P4 finish in the 2022 Championship, earning him enough super licence points to take part in the 2023 Formula 1 season.

As well as F2, Sargeant has raced in Formula 4 UAE, Formula Renault Eurocup and Formula 3 as well as the 2021 European Le Mans Series.
